Nutrition may play a role in bone and joint health. A variety of nutrients, including glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate, Advan-C® and specific antioxidant vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients may promote bone, joint, ligament and cartilage health.

Glucosamine is a compound naturally formed in your body from glucose. Your body uses this nutrient to stimulate chondrocyte cells to create one of the main building blocks of joint cartilage -- proteoglycans. Over time, the amount of glucosamine your body creates decreases. As a result, cartilage and bones may begin to scrape against each other, joints become damaged, and the lubricating synovial fluid in joint spaces may become thin and watery.

Chondroitin sulfate -- a long chain of repeating sugars -- provides additional benefits. It has a bristle-brush configuration that allows it to attract and hold water to cartilage-building proteoglycan molecules. Because cartilage has no blood supply, this fluid is necessary to nourish and lubricate joints.

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is a natural source of organic sulfur, which is important for the formation of collagen, and is required by many of the body's structural molecules. MSM may play a part in joint health and function, and for all types of connective tissue, in general. It may also help maintain skin, hair and nail health.
